The Full Story
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Yunus was born around 950 CE in Fustat, the old capital of Egypt, into a family with a distinguished scholarly tradition. His father was a noted historian and hadith scholar. Ibn Yunus came of age during the establishment of the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt and became the leading astronomer under Caliph al-Aziz and his successor, Caliph al-Hakim.
His masterwork, the "Zij al-Kabir al-Hakimi" (The Great Hakimite Astronomical Tables), dedicated to Caliph al-Hakim, was based on decades of meticulous observations and is one of the most important astronomical works of the medieval period. It contained detailed tables for calculating the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets, as well as eclipses, with a level of accuracy that surpassed earlier works. He recorded over 10,000 entries of solar and lunar positions, providing invaluable data for later astronomers.
Ibn Yunus was also mathematically innovative. He developed methods for solving spherical trigonometric problems that simplified astronomical calculations considerably. He made significant use of the prosthaphaeresis method, which uses trigonometric identities to convert multiplication into addition, a technique that would become important for computational efficiency centuries before the invention of logarithms.
His careful observations of lunar eclipses have proven so accurate that modern astronomers have used them to study the long-term deceleration of the Earth's rotation. Ibn Yunus died in 1009 CE in Fustat. His work represented the pinnacle of Fatimid astronomy and influenced astronomers throughout the Islamic world and beyond.
