Al-Zarqali was the foremost astronomer of Al-Andalus, who invented the universal astrolabe (saphaea) that could be used at any latitude. He compiled the influential Toledo Tables and corrected Ptolemy's model for the motion of Mercury.

The Full Story

Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Yahya al-Naqqash al-Zarqali was born in 1029 CE in Toledo, the intellectual capital of Al-Andalus at the time. Originally trained as a metalworker (al-naqqash means engraver), he attracted the attention of the city's astronomers through his exceptional skill in constructing instruments. His talent for both craftsmanship and mathematics propelled him to become the leading astronomer of 11th-century Iberia.

Al-Zarqali's most celebrated invention was the "saphaea" or universal astrolabe, a sophisticated modification of the traditional astrolabe that could be used at any latitude, unlike conventional models that required separate plates for different locations. This instrument was described in detail in his treatise and became widely known in both the Islamic world and medieval Europe, where it was called the "saphaea Arzachelis."

He was the principal author of the famous Toledo Tables (Tabulae Toletanae), astronomical tables based on extensive observations conducted over a period of about 25 years. These tables corrected errors in earlier works and became the most widely used astronomical tables in medieval Europe for over a century, until superseded by the Alfonsine Tables (which themselves drew heavily on al-Zarqali's work). He also made the important discovery that the solar apogee moves with respect to the fixed stars, and he corrected Ptolemy's model for the orbit of Mercury.

When Toledo fell to Alfonso VI of Castile in 1085, al-Zarqali relocated to Cordoba, where he died in 1087. His work was translated into Latin and profoundly influenced European astronomy. Copernicus referenced his measurements, and a lunar crater bears his name.
