The Full Story

Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham was born around 965 CE in Basra, then a major intellectual center of the Abbasid world. He initially served as a civil servant before devoting himself entirely to scientific research. He was summoned to Fatimid Egypt by Caliph al-Hakim to devise a scheme to regulate the flooding of the Nile, but upon surveying the river near Aswan, he realized the project was impractical. According to traditional accounts, he feigned madness to avoid the caliph's wrath and was placed under house arrest until al-Hakim's death in 1021.

During and after this period of confinement in Cairo, Ibn al-Haytham produced his masterwork, "Kitab al-Manazir" (Book of Optics), completed around 1011-1021 CE. This seven-volume treatise decisively refuted the "emission theory" of Euclid and Ptolemy, which held that the eye sends out rays to perceive objects. Instead, Ibn al-Haytham demonstrated through meticulous experiments that vision occurs when light rays enter the eye, forming images. He conducted the first experiments with the camera obscura, analyzed reflection and refraction, and studied the anatomy of the eye with remarkable accuracy.

What made Ibn al-Haytham truly revolutionary was his methodology. He insisted on systematic experimentation and mathematical proof rather than relying on authority or speculation. His approach anticipated the scientific method by centuries. His optical work was translated into Latin as "De Aspectibus" and profoundly influenced Roger Bacon, Witelo, Johannes Kepler, and the development of European science.

Ibn al-Haytham authored over 200 works on topics ranging from astronomy and mathematics to engineering. He is widely regarded as one of the earliest advocates of the modern scientific method.
