The Full Story

Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Tusi, known as Nasir al-Din, was born in 1201 CE in Tus, Khorasan. He studied in his hometown and Nishapur before the Mongol invasions upended his world. He spent years in Ismaili fortresses in northern Iran, including Alamut, where he produced several important works. After the Mongol conquest of the Ismaili strongholds in 1256, he entered the service of the Mongol ruler Hulagu Khan, becoming one of his most trusted advisors.

Al-Tusi convinced Hulagu to build the Maragheh Observatory in what is now northwestern Iran, completed around 1259. This observatory was the most advanced of its time, equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and staffed by astronomers from across the Islamic world and beyond, including Chinese scholars. It produced the "Zij-i Ilkhani" (Ilkhanic Tables), a set of astronomical tables that corrected and improved upon earlier works and remained in use for centuries.

His mathematical contributions were profound. His "Tahrir al-Majisti" (Commentary on the Almagest) introduced the "Tusi couple," a geometric device that resolved problems in Ptolemaic planetary models by generating linear motion from circular components. This same device appears in Copernicus's "De Revolutionibus," leading historians to investigate possible transmission pathways. His "Treatise on the Quadrilateral" was the first work to treat trigonometry as a discipline independent of astronomy, systematically presenting spherical trigonometry with proofs.

Al-Tusi was also a respected philosopher and ethicist. His "Akhlaq-i Nasiri" (Nasirean Ethics) is one of the most widely read works of Islamic ethical philosophy. He died in Baghdad in 1274, leaving a legacy that spanned astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, and institutional science.
