Taqi al-Din built the Istanbul Observatory in 1577, the largest astronomical observatory in the Islamic world at the time, and made observations rivaling those of his European contemporary Tycho Brahe. He also described an early steam turbine and invented a six-cylinder water pump, representing the peak of Ottoman scientific achievement.

The Full Story

Born in Damascus, Taqi al-Din received his education in Egypt and Syria before moving to Istanbul. He was a polymath of remarkable range, working in astronomy, optics, mechanics, mathematics, and timekeeping. His breadth of expertise brought him to the attention of Sultan Murad III, who appointed him chief astronomer of the empire.

In 1577, Taqi al-Din was granted permission to build an observatory on a hill overlooking the Bosphorus. The Istanbul Observatory was equipped with instruments comparable to or exceeding those of Tycho Brahe's Uraniborg, which was being constructed at the same time in Denmark. His astronomical tables, based on observations made there, achieved a level of accuracy that rivaled the best European work of the period.

Beyond astronomy, Taqi al-Din made contributions to mechanical engineering that were centuries ahead of their time. In his work Al-Turuq al-Saniya fi al-Alat al-Ruhaniya (The Sublime Methods of Spiritual Machines), he described a rudimentary steam turbine driven by jets of steam, predating similar European descriptions. He also designed a six-cylinder water pump and various mechanical clocks.

Tragically, the Istanbul Observatory was destroyed in 1580 on the orders of Sultan Murad III, reportedly after lobbying by conservative clerics who opposed astronomical observation. The destruction marked a turning point in Ottoman engagement with the physical sciences. Taqi al-Din continued to work until his death in 1585, but the loss of the observatory signaled the end of an era of major Ottoman scientific institution-building.
