Abu al-Wafa al-Buzjani was one of the most accomplished mathematicians of the Islamic Golden Age, whose systematic work on trigonometry introduced the tangent and cotangent functions into standard usage and produced trigonometric tables of unprecedented accuracy. His work on spherical trigonometry advanced both astronomy and practical geometry.

The Full Story
Abu al-Wafa Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Buzjani was born in 940 CE in the town of Buzjan in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia. He moved to Baghdad in 959 at the age of nineteen, during the period of Buyid patronage, and spent the remainder of his life in the Abbasid capital. He became one of the leading figures at the observatory and scholarly circles of Baghdad, where he worked alongside other eminent scientists of the era.
His most significant contributions were to trigonometry. While the sine function had been established by Indian and earlier Islamic mathematicians, Abu al-Wafa systematized the use of the tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant functions, presenting them as standard tools for astronomical calculation. He compiled trigonometric tables with values computed to eight decimal places, a remarkable level of precision for the tenth century. His proof of the addition theorem for sines - sin(a + b) = sin a cos b + cos a sin b - was an important advance in mathematical reasoning.
Abu al-Wafa also made major contributions to spherical trigonometry, which was essential for astronomical computations such as determining the qibla direction and prayer times. His astronomical handbook, the "Zij al-Majisti," synthesized Greek and Islamic astronomical knowledge with refined trigonometric methods. He also wrote a practical arithmetic text for scribes and businessmen, demonstrating his interest in making mathematics accessible to non-specialists.
Beyond pure mathematics, Abu al-Wafa contributed to geometric constructions using a fixed compass opening (a "rusty compass"), solving problems that had challenged earlier geometers. He was known for his clarity of exposition and pedagogical skill. A crater on the Moon is named after him in recognition of his contributions to astronomy. He died in Baghdad in 998.
