The Full Story
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was born around 780 CE in the region of Khwarezm, in what is now Uzbekistan. He spent most of his scholarly career in Baghdad, where he worked at the famous Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) under the patronage of Caliph al-Ma'mun. This institution was the intellectual heart of the Abbasid Caliphate, dedicated to translating and advancing the knowledge of earlier civilizations.
His most celebrated work, "Al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala" (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing), written around 820 CE, established algebra as an independent mathematical discipline. The word "algebra" derives directly from "al-jabr" in the title. Unlike earlier Greek mathematics, which was primarily geometric, al-Khwarizmi presented systematic methods for solving linear and quadratic equations using words rather than symbols.
He also wrote a treatise on the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, which, through its Latin translation "Algoritmi de Numero Indorum," introduced the decimal positional number system to the Western world. The Latinized form of his name, "Algoritmi," became the root of the word "algorithm." His contributions to geography, astronomy, and calendar reform were equally significant.
Al-Khwarizmi's legacy is immeasurable. His algebraic methods became the foundation upon which later mathematicians in both the Islamic world and medieval Europe built their work. He remains one of the most influential mathematicians in history, a bridge between ancient and modern mathematics.
