Abbas ibn Firnas was an Andalusian polymath best known for his attempted controlled flight in 875 CE, leaping from a height near Cordoba with a winged apparatus. Though he sustained injuries on landing, his experiment is one of the earliest recorded attempts at human flight.

The Full Story
Abbas ibn Firnas was born in 810 CE in Ronda, in the mountainous region of Al-Andalus, and spent his career in Cordoba, the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate of the West. He was a polymath of remarkable breadth, with contributions to astronomy, chemistry, engineering, and music, but he is remembered above all for his daring attempt at human flight.
According to the Moroccan historian al-Maqqari, drawing on earlier sources, Ibn Firnas constructed a winged apparatus covered with feathers and silk, and in 875 CE, at approximately the age of 65, he launched himself from a promontory near Cordoba before an assembled crowd. He reportedly glided for a considerable distance before crash-landing, injuring his back. Observers noted that he had neglected to design a tail mechanism for controlled descent, a flaw he himself recognized. This experiment preceded any recorded European attempts at flight by several centuries.
Beyond aviation, Ibn Firnas made notable contributions in other fields. He devised a method for cutting rock crystal, a technique previously known only to the Egyptians. He constructed a planetarium-like device with moving planets, thunder, and lightning effects, reportedly housed in a room in his home. He is also credited with developing a form of clear glass and with innovations in timekeeping.
While some modern historians debate the details of the flight account, Ibn Firnas remains an enduring symbol of scientific daring and innovation. A crater on the Moon is named in his honor, and a large monument stands near Baghdad's international airport commemorating his contribution to the dream of human flight.
