1029 – 1072 CE
Alp Arslan was the Seljuk sultan whose decisive victory over the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 permanently opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement and Islam. This single battle fundamentally altered the demographic and religious map of the Middle East, ultimately leading to the creation of modern Turkey.

Nizam al-Mulk was the most powerful vizier in Islamic history, serving two Seljuk sultans for thirty years. He founded the Nizamiyya network of madrasas -- the first organized system of higher education in the Islamic world -- and authored the Siyasatnama, one of the great treatises on statecraft.
